MARY'S CORNER
MY FRIEND'S GRANDMOTHER DIED ON THURS, SHE WAS 101 AND WORKED AT HER CORNER STORE IN SOUTH BROOKLYN TILL SHE WAS 96. MARY'S ITALIAN AMERICAN GROCERY STORE CATERED TO EVERYONE IN THIS WORKING CLASS AREA WHICH IS NOW BEING GENTRIFIED AND ALL OLD STORES ARE BECOMING NEW. SHE WOULD GIVE CREDIT TO BLACK, WHITE, SPANISH. DIDN'T MATTER IF YOU WORKED IN OR WERE FROM THE AREA SHE TOOK CARE OF YOU.LOTS OF TOUGH GUYS AND DRUGS IN AREA BACK IN THE DAY BUT NO ONE EVER ROBBED MARY'S. ALL OF US WOULD LOOK OVER HERE. I THINK IT WOULD BE GREAT IF WE COULD NAME THE CORNER AFTER HER, SO THE NEW COMERS WILL ALWAYS ASK ABOUT AND BE TOLD WHO MARY WAS. THE OLD-TIMERS KNOW.I WANT TO START A CRUSADE TO RE-NAME PRESIDENT ST AND 3RD AVE CORNER OF THE STORE "MARY'S CORNER".

RK, I will sign that Mary's Corner petition. I remember the first time my new boyfriend Georgie (now husband) went into Mary's to buy American cheese for my Aunt Anna. When he got it home Aunt Anna didn't like that Mary cut him the cheese from the end piece. She marched Georgie back to Mary's and told her when this guy comes in here he is buying for me so make sure you give him the good cheese not the end piece - LOL! I don't know why but her sandwiches always tasted so good when we ate them on the stoop in the summertime. I really miss those old days my friend.
THOSE WERE THE BEST SANDWICH'S AND THE BEST DAYS AND WE ALL HAD A FAVORITE ONE OF OUR OWN,I USED TO GET HAM SWISS AND MAYO EVERYDAY.
Aunt Anna didnt like the way Mary cut the cheese?????
